Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Calvin Nhieu (“I,” “me,” or “my”), an individual based in Ontario, Canada, collects, uses, and shares personal information when you use Pear Bible (the “App”) and any related services.

1. Who I am

Pear Bible is a mobile application that provides Bible reading and study features along with chat and community functionality. The App is operated by Calvin Nhieu, an individual developer located in Ontario, Canada.

For the purposes of Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), I am the individual responsible for the personal information under my control. For users in the United States, I honor the rights described in Section 8 below. For users in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, I act as the data controller for your personal information.


2. Information I collect

2.1 Information you provide directly

  • Account information: I support three sign-in methods:
    • Google Sign-In: I receive your email address, name (if available), and a unique Google account identifier.
    • Sign in with Apple: I receive your Apple user identifier and either your real email address or the private relay email Apple generates if you choose “Hide My Email.”
    • Email with one-time password (OTP): I receive your email address, which I use as your account identifier. A one-time code is sent to that email to verify it belongs to you. I do not store passwords for this method.
  • Profile information: Any optional details you add to your profile, such as a display name or avatar.
  • User-generated content: Messages you send in chat, posts, comments, reading progress, notes, highlights, and any other content you create within the App.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Device and technical data: Device type, operating system version, app version, language settings, and time zone.
  • Log data: IP address, access times, and basic request metadata, collected by my backend infrastructure for security and debugging.
  • Crash and error data: When the App crashes or encounters an error, I collect diagnostic information such as stack traces, device state, and the actions leading up to the issue. This is processed by my crash reporting provider (see Section 4).
  • Push notification tokens: A unique device token used to deliver push notifications, if you enable them.

2.3 Information I do not collect

I do not collect precise location data, contacts, photos, microphone or camera input, health data, or financial information. I do not use advertising identifiers and do not serve advertisements in the App.


3. How I use your information

I use your personal information to:

  • Create and manage your account and authenticate you across sessions
  • Send one-time verification codes to your email when you sign in
  • Provide the App’s core features, including Bible reading, study tools, and chat
  • Deliver messages between users in real time
  • Send you transactional emails (e.g., account verification, important service notices)
  • Send push notifications you have opted into
  • Diagnose crashes, fix bugs, and improve App stability and performance
  • Protect the security of the App, prevent abuse, and enforce my terms
  • Comply with legal obligations

Legal bases (for users in the EEA/UK): I rely on (a) performance of a contract with you to provide the App’s features, (b) my legitimate interests in securing the App and improving it, (c) your consent for optional features such as push notifications, and (d) compliance with legal obligations where applicable.


4. Third parties I share information with

I use the following service providers (“processors”) to operate the App. These providers process your information on my behalf and are bound by contractual obligations to protect it.

I do not sell your personal information, and I do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

I may also disclose your information if required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of users or the public.


5. International data transfers

My service providers may store and process your information in the United States, the European Union, or other countries outside Canada. Where information is transferred internationally, I rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses (for EEA/UK users) and my providers’ compliance commitments.

By using the App, you understand that your information may be processed in countries whose data protection laws differ from those in your country of residence.


6. Data retention

I keep your personal information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, I delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where I am required to retain it for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes.

Backups containing your information are retained for up to 90 days before being overwritten.

Crash and log data is retained for up to 90 days for debugging purposes.


7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information I hold about you.
  • Correction: Ask me to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated personal information.
  • Withdrawal of consent: Withdraw consent for any processing based on consent (e.g., push notifications).
  • Portability: Request your information in a machine-readable format (EEA/UK and certain US states).
  • Objection / restriction: Object to or restrict certain processing (EEA/UK).
  • Complaint: Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In Canada, this is the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca).

US-specific rights are described in Section 8.

To exercise any of these rights, contact me at hello@pearbible.com. I will respond within 30 days, or sooner where required by applicable law.

You can also delete your account and associated data directly within the App at [Profile → Settings → Delete Account], or by emailing me.


8. US state privacy rights

This section applies to users who are residents of the United States. Different US states grant different privacy rights, and the laws below may not all currently apply to me based on revenue and user-count thresholds. Regardless of strict legal applicability, I voluntarily honor the core rights described here for all US residents.

8.1 Categories of personal information I collect

In the past 12 months, I have collected the following categories of personal information, as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar state laws:

  • Identifiers: name, email address, account IDs from Google or Apple, IP address, device identifiers
  • Internet or other electronic network activity: app usage data, log data, crash reports
  • User-generated content: messages, notes, posts, and other content you create in the App
  • Inferences: none — I do not build profiles or make inferences about you for advertising or commercial purposes

I collect this information directly from you and from your device. The purposes are described in Section 3, and the third parties I share with are listed in Section 4.

8.2 Sale and sharing of personal information

I do not sell your personal information, and I do not share it with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under the CCPA. I have not done so in the past 12 months. I do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of minors under 16.

8.3 Sensitive personal information

I do not use or disclose “sensitive personal information” (as defined under the CCPA) for purposes other than those permitted without a right to limit, such as providing the App’s services and security.

8.4 Your rights as a US resident

Depending on the state in which you reside (including California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, and others), you may have some or all of the following rights:

  • Right to know / access: Request to know what personal information I have collected about you, the sources, the purposes, and the categories of third parties I share it with.
  • Right to delete: Request deletion of personal information I have collected from you.
  • Right to correct: Request correction of inaccurate personal information.
  • Right to portability: Receive your personal information in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Right to opt out of sale or sharing: As stated above, I do not sell or share your personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. If this ever changes, I will update this policy and provide an opt-out mechanism.
  • Right to limit use of sensitive personal information: As stated above, I do not use sensitive personal information beyond permitted purposes.
  • Right to non-discrimination: I will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

8.5 How to exercise your rights

To exercise any of these rights, email me at hello@pearbible.com with the subject line “Privacy Rights Request” and tell me which right you’d like to exercise.

I may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request, typically by confirming the email address associated with your account or by asking you to confirm details only the account holder would know. I will respond within 45 days, with one possible 45-day extension where reasonably necessary, as permitted by law.

You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. The agent must provide written proof of authorization, and I may still ask you to verify your identity directly.

8.6 California “Shine the Light”

California Civil Code Section 1798.83 permits California residents to request information about disclosures of personal information to third parties for those parties’ direct marketing purposes. As stated above, I do not share personal information with third parties for their direct marketing purposes.


9. Children’s privacy

The App is intended for users aged 13 and older, and aged 16 and older in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area. The App detects your country and applies the appropriate minimum age. Users must confirm they meet this minimum age before using the App, including before browsing or reading content anonymously.

I do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the UK/EEA). I do not direct the App at children, and I do not market the App to children. If I learn that I have collected personal information from a child under the applicable age without verifiable parental consent, I will delete that information and any associated account as soon as possible.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided me with personal information in violation of the minimum age, please contact me at hello@pearbible.com and I will promptly delete the information.

This section is intended to comply with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and equivalent provisions in Canadian, UK, and European law.


10. Security

I use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest for stored data, access controls, and Row Level Security (RLS) policies on my database. No system is perfectly secure, however, and I cannot guarantee absolute security.

If I become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, I will notify you and the appropriate authorities as required by applicable law.


11. Changes to this policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When I make material changes, I will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the App or by email. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
